No, it's not what you're thinking,...we're talking about "feminism". When you hear the word feminism, what comes to mind?
Before taking this Woman's Studies course (Women and Gender in Contemporary Society), I'll be honest, the first thing that came to mind was "femi-nazi". I picture anti-male women protesting for something but at the same time trying to separate themselves completely from the male sex. Yes, I know that's rude and everything else, but it just shows how uninformed I was about true feminism. Feminism is many different things, even within the "feminist" world. There are many different kinds of feminists each with their different views (such as radical feminists, ecofeminists, and many more) just as there are different "views" of liberal, democrat, republican within their political world.
So what I would like to know, what does it mean to you to be a feminist? Do you consider yourself to be one? If you do, are you "ashamed" or proud to admit it? With anything, there are extremes (both good and bad) but there is also a middle ground. This is where I find myself. I am 100% FOR women's rights, equal in everything, but don't agree with excluding like-minded men from the "pool." I think in excluding them we are doing the same thing it is that some feminists are fighting for, equality. If you have a daughter, will you share your views with her? (if you are a feminist) If you have a son, will you share your views?
I found this article to be especially enlightening with some good points.
Respect
We may not agree with everything, or anything for that matter, that is said or commented on this blog. However, in order to participate, you MUST respect the opinions of others.
There is nothing saying your opinion cannot differ from that of others, but when sharing your opinion it must be presented in a respectful manner. There are right ways to debate and there are wrong ways (to argue). Please choose the right way: use proper English, refrain from cursing or using foul language (if a must for "emphasis" use symbols), no slurs based on race/ethnicity, sex/gender, or otherwise will be tolerated.
